FAQ

I have a small screen and some pictures simply do not fit. It’s not fair!
If your monitor doesn’t allow viewing some of the pictures, you can set the maximum permitted size for images to suitable values, using the “Setup / Image Size” option. The images that are too big for your screen will be automatically resized to fit the maximum dimensions that you have specified. If you wish to see the resized image in its original size, you can click on the link below the picture.
I’ve submitted a picture but then realised that I can improve or change it somewhat. Can I submit a new version without losing all the critiques and comments?
Yes. To submit a new version of the same work, you should click on “change/delete” link under your work. “Edit submission” page will open; you can load a new version from there. If you refresh your work using this option, please reflect it in a comment, otherwise the previous discussion might look meaningless for a new viewer.
When I was submitting my work, I specified that it should be included into one of the site’s projects. For some reason it was not included. I tried again and again, but to no avail.
Our projects are pre-moderated. When you specify that your work should be included into one of the projects, an application letter is sent to the curators of this project. Curators are listed on the project page. If curators decide that your work is suitable for the project, they will include it into the project. The process normally takes no longer than a day.
I submitted a work two days ago; now I want to submit another one, but apparently my submission limit is still exhausted. Why – I thought I can send one work every two days?
“Day” effectively means “24 hours”, so if you sent a work at 21.15 two days ago, the next one can be submitted as 21.15 today – 48 hours after the previous one.
I’ve submitted a work/written a critique, but now it seems to have disappeared. What happened?

This site is moderated, according to the rules and plain common sense. If you are absolutely convinced that the moderator acted incorrectly, please write to info@hiero.ru. We won’t restore the work (or comment), but might at least commiserate with you on your loss.

Seriously now – the site is moderated according to a strict set of rules and what is permitted on some other art-sites will not be admissible here. Moderators aim to prevent the site from turning into art garbage heap, a place for displaying family albums and chatting with friends. Remember – what you liked about our site when you decided to register here is a consequence of this policy. So, if you find that your work or comments deleted by a moderator, try to think why it could have happened. Moderators are humans and as such can make mistakes, but they rarely do; they have a lot of experience and worked for this site for a long time

Why don’t you have ratings/marks, as on the other artsites? Why can’t I give an “A” to a work I really like?
This topic was discussed over and over and the conclusion was always the same: ratings and marks do not give any real advantages, but rather tend to provoke conflicts between the users. Observing other artsites only confirms this conclusion. There never will be any ratings or marks on this site.
What does “included in N albums” (in red, next to some of my work) mean?
It means that one or more or the viewers found this work so interesting/appealing/good that they included it into the list or their personal favourites, “personal album”. If you hover mouse pointer over the red text, you can see who those viewers were.
I’ve submitted a photo of my cat and then it was deleted. Why?

Site moderators love felines. Our actions are explained by that love. For some obscure reason, cats are the favourite subject for anybody armed with a camera; the snapshots of cats proliferate all over the internet. “Kitty” AKA “catography” became a synonym of tasteless snapshot in “awww cute” style. It doesn’t happen so much with dogs – probably because dogs are quite difficult to catch, whereas cats are mostly willing models. Despite their willingness, it is very difficult to make a good photo of a cat– most of those snaps look the same (you can see an interesting discussion about this here, see the first comment under the work). Also authors tend to be very sensitive about the comments, somehow failing to understand that those who are not on personal terms with their pet can see the work for what it is – a poor photo.

We grew somewhat tired explaining all the above under each cat photo and decided that we would be more selective specifically towards catography. It doesn’t mean that each and every cat photo will be deleted. If you manage to make a photograph that is not simply “yet another kitty”, you are welcome with it here. Otherwise please be prepared for its swift disappearance. This is part of our efforts in keeping the level of artwork on this site above average. Consider it one more facet of our service.

All the above applies to cat photos only. We find that artists working in other media invest more effort in their cat-themed work and the results are much better than the efforts of catographers.

How do works find their way into “Selected” (upper left corner of the page)? Can I see the complete list of selected works? How can I get my work in there?

Site administration chooses the works for “Selected” list, going by their quality and the subject. Authors of work that are displayed there don’t gain any advantage over other authors apart from the additional display space itself. If a work is not included into the “Selected” works, it doesn’t mean that the site administration is of low opinion about it.

It’s not possible to see the full list of “Selected” works. Administration retain the right to form the “Selected” list themselves, as a prize for their work supporting the site. Third-party recommendations for “Selected” list will be considered but not necessarily followed.

If your question is not answered above, please ask it in our forum or write to info@hiero.ru.
